In the meantime, let us return to Meena and her story. In last week’s post, I explained the simplicity of the cover based on the simplicity that is Meena. Most of the time, it is not the characters of the story who are complicated. It is almost always their circumstances.

As simple as she is on the outside, Meena is just as simple on the inside. Like every other young woman of her age and time, Meena wants nothing more than love, marriage, and children. Despite being married before the white uniform became her destiny, our girl has no clue what it means to be in love. Two years of marriage left her with more questions than answers about what a marriage is supposed to be. But what does it matter now anyway? It will never happen again. Right?

Meena has reconciled with the traditions that forbid her a second chance. She has settled for a domestic life in her father Rakesh’s home. In the absence of her mother, Meena oversees the daily routine that is life in the Kumar household and helps Rakesh with his business as he and Ram deem appropriate. However, an ocean of possibilities exists beyond these boundaries. An ocean that coincidentally lies in the deep blue eyes of Henry Whitefield, Rakesh’s English business partner.

Like I said. Most of the time, it is not the characters of the story who are complicated. It is their circumstances that dictate how complex and flawed they become. As simple as Meena’s desires are, she has reconciled with never getting what she truly wants. But her circumstances are about to get complicated. And when they do, we will see how complex and flawed our girl truly is. Which hand she will play with the cards fate is about to hand to her.
