Last week, I left you with a thought around the complexity of characters versus the complexity of their circumstances. As I read through the proof copy of this novel, I cannot help but wonder if our complexity is innate and just needs the right temptation to reveal itself. Kind of like using cheese to tempt a mouse, simply moving along minding its own business. Along comes a whiff of something that tempts its senses and, before it can escape, it has been trapped.

Henry Whitefield’s ocean eyes might just be the thing to begin tempting Meena’s senses. In the stories I have read about colonial India, the white man is often referred as the blue-eyed devil. Evidently, Meena was not the only one to get lured in. During my research for this book, I began to understand why. If you want to learn more, then watch the videos or read the posts on the historical and cultural context for this story. There is much to unpack.

Anyway, Henry’s eyes, as beautiful as they are, do not on their own create any complexity for Meena. She could find a man attractive but does not believe any man’s attraction towards her could possibly go beyond lust. She can stare into those deep blue eyes all she wants, as rare as that occurrence might be for her. But Henry would never look back at her as nothing more than a temptation to ignore, or perhaps act upon, until his desire for it fades away.

Yet, lust never rears its ugly head in his eyes. In fact, Meena does not know how to read the man’s eyes. I suppose it would help if the two of them ever said more than a “hello” to each other. If they never did, though, then we would not have a story on our hands either. So, not to worry, my friends. The temptation that is complexity is just around the corner. I am just trying to not give away too much before the book launches on March 1^st.
