I started posting about Meena’s story on December 1st and, over five weeks, scratched the surface with three key reveals. First, Meena is a 25-year-old educated widow living in 1930s India and forbidden to remarry. Yet, this is what Meena wants most out of her life. The things she cannot have. It is not illegal for her to remarry but age-old traditions stand in the way of her finding someone open-minded enough to see beyond her white uniform.

Second, Meena has a loving family consisting of her father, Rakesh, and cousin, Ram, who are ruled first and foremost by their love for her. They refused to let her become a Sati, illegal under the British Raj but practiced by those who think they can get away with it. Rakesh and Ram refused to abandon her to an ashram or a temple, bringing her home to resume her pre-marital life. As a result, Meena runs the Kumar household and occasionally lends a hand in the family business.

Third, as simple as Meena is in her simple life at home, reconciled to never getting what she truly wants out of life, her circumstances are about to get complicated by the ocean of possibilities in the deep blue eyes of Henry Whitefield. Those eyes look at her as though they wish to drown her. Meena enjoys looking into those eyes as well, on the rare occasion she bumps into Henry when he visits her father at home. He is, after all, Rakesh’s business partner under the Raj.

How long before Meena and Henry make it beyond saying a casual “hello” and going their separate ways? What will be the “inciting incident,” as it is called in writing, that will complicate matters? Who will incite this incident? Elizabeth Whitefield, of course. Henry’s sister who, like Meena, is widowed. Unlike Meena, though, Elizabeth, or Eliza, is pregnant and in need of major help. After all, she only arrived in India from Europe two months ago.
