“There should be more to life than pretending to be dead,” believes Meena, a 25-year-old educated widow to whom love, marriage, and children are forbidden in 1930s India. When a paid job opens the door to having it all, Meena must cross the boundaries of race and religion to build the life forbidden to her. Only to lose everything after India gains its independence from Great Britain and is thrown into the chaos of partition. Will Meena be able to get it all back? How?

Someone asked me if this book is about Indian culture. I immediately replied, “absolutely not!” and clarified this is precisely the reason its cover does not imply anything close to “this is a book about India” or “this is a story about Indian culture” or something similar. Indian culture, and its history, are part of the context surrounding Meena’s story. This novel is Historical Fiction and Women’s Fiction for the following reasons.

First, Meena’s story unfolds over the years before and after World War II, India’s independence from Great Britain, and India’s partition into two countries. The last two events are the result of centuries of history that shaped India and, consequently, Meena’s life. This history and India’s culture set the context for the story. The aftermath of World War II was not experienced just by the West. It permanently impacted the East as well, including India.

Second, Meena’s story is Women’s Fiction because the premise of the story is unique to women. Someone once asked me to define this genre. I answered, “Women’s Fiction tells stories embedded in situations only women would face. Never men.” Meena is a widow who is forbidden to remarry. Other cultures throughout history have forbidden the same to women, but I am not aware of a culture that has ever forbidden remarriage to men. If you are, then please let me know.

I hope you will check out the book’s page and place your pre-order for an eBook. If you prefer paperback or hardcover, then mark your calendars for March 1st.
